Why do we have Christmas?  Luke 19:10 says Jesus came to seek and save that which was lost.  God’s love is too grand for us to understand, His grace is too much, so He humbled himself and became a baby so we could understand.

Divine humility is what Christmas is all about.  God became man, born to die and live again so that mankind can be born again and never die.  The message of Christmas is the message of Easter.

In Philippians, Paul says people need to imitate Christ’s humility.

  • CHRISTMAS PAST:  Before the incarnation He is divine.  Although He existed in the form of God, that form was not something that He would hang onto at all costs.  He was committed to come to earth as man. (Phil 2:6)
  • CHRISTMAS PRESENT:  He humbled Himself, becoming a bondservant, in the likeness of man.  He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death on the cross.  He submitted to the will of the Father, retaining his divinity but choosing of His own free will to limit His divine attributes.  (Phil 2:7-8)
  • CHRISTMAS FUTURE:  Because of Christ’s humility and obedience to the Father, God highly exalted Him.  Every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.  In the book of Acts, it says that no name except by the name of Christ will be saved. (Phil 2:9)

Application

For those who have bowed the knee and confess the Lord as Savior already:  Are you humble?  Are you a servant?  (Phil 1:20, Phil 2:5)  What a great time at Christmas to serve others.  God exalts the humble and puts down the proud.  Have the attitude of Christ — be a servant.

  • For those who haven’t yet bowed the knee — who have not come to faith in Christ:  What are you waiting for?  Could there be a better Christmas present than to humble yourself and receive eternal life?  Bow today.  Don’t miss the gift.  What are you waiting for?

“One of the marks of real Christianity is humility.” (William Wilberforce)  Without humility there would be no Christmas.  For without humility there would be no cross.  For without humility, there would be no life, there would be nothing worth celebrating.

No one comes to Christ without humility and no one continues in Christ without it.  It is what we have been called to do.

Celebrate family, good times, the love of Christ and His humility, and the grace of God.  Pray that humility would be something that we ourselves would practice.
