Seek the Welfare of the City – Week 12

December 14th, 2010
Who Stands Fast? A Christian Call to Civil Disobedience
“Who stands fast?” Dietrich Bonhoeffer
When Should Christians Disobey?
Two points of clarification:
Resistance:
Rebellion:
Christians should resist if the state presumes an allegiance reserved for God alone.
Daniel 3:1–18
Christians should resist if the state attempts to confine their freedom of conscience.
Daniel 6:1–11
Acts 4 and 5:28–29
Christians should resist if the state, through unjust laws, compels them to disobey God’s law.
Exodus 1:9–17, 21
The example of Martin Luther King Jr.
How should Christians disobey?
Christians should seek peaceful and lawful means of civil disobedience first.
Christians may seek non-violent, unlawful means of civil disobedience next.
Christians may seek violent means of civil disobedience only as a final resort.
Questions to Ponder and Discuss
1. Can Christians disobey the government and retain their Christian character and calling to seek the welfare of the city? Explain.
2. What is your honest opinion about the reasons given for disobedience?
3. Can you think of other biblical reasons when a Christian might have a right to disobey the government? If so, what are they?
4. If Christians can disobey government authority from time-to-time, how should we go about doing so?
5. Is the U.S. currently in a situation that might demand Christian civil disobedience? Explain.
