Seek the Welfare of the City – Week 6

October 26th, 2010

Government is a necessary good, not merely to administer temporal order for the mutual benefit of its citizens, but also to preserve the dignity of its citizens.

Governments should provide social order.

Governments should preserve human dignity (Genesis 4:9–15).

Governments should punish evil and praise goodness (Romans 13:3–7).

Governments should promote justice.

Governments should protect peace.

Questions to Ponder and Discuss

1. What do you think about the notion that governmental authority resides with God alone and not with the consent of the governed?

2. What do you think about the notion that disobedience to the civil authority is disobedience to God?

3. What do you think is the most important purpose of government?

4. What is the one purpose in which our federal government is fulfilling? What is the one purpose in which our government is failing to fulfill?

5. We discussed five divine purposes for government. Can you think of any others?
