Seek the Welfare of the City – Week 2

September 20th, 2010

We must recapture a prophetic vision of how to live Christianly in the public square, so we can fulfill God’s command to “seek the welfare of the city” (Jeremiah 29:7).

The Importance of Christian Citizenship

1. We’re commanded to practice our faith for the good of the public square.

2. We’re ignorant of what God really has to say about faith in the public square.

3. We’re blind to how progressive ideology have marginalized faith from the public square.

4. We’re confused about where faith fits within the public square.

5. We’re often wrong in our responses to the challenge of faith in the public square.

The Focus of Christian Citizenship

We won’t focus on . . .

1. Political philosophies

2. Political parties

3. Political personalities

4. Political policies or controversies

We will focus on . . .

Number one: Christian citizenship and public life

Number two: Christian citizenship and government

Number three: Christian citizenship and social justice

Number four: Christian citizenship and freedom

Number five: Christian citizenship and patriotism

The Goal of Christian Citizenship

We must recapture a prophetic vision of how to live Christianly in the public square, so we can fulfill God’s command to “seek the welfare of the city” (Jeremiah 29:7).

Questions to Ponder and Discuss

1. Do you sense that something as shifted in America, and not for the better? Explain.

2. What do you think a Christian’s responsibility is to the American community?

3. What kind of society do you think we should have: sacred, secular, civil? Why?

4. How well have Christians responded to the challenge of faith in the public square?

5. What questions do you think we should cover in this series? Please e-mail those to derrick@derrickjeter.com.
